The Telegraph has published a long and not very revealing survey on the paedophile financier’s craving for relationships with individuals in the classical music world. Most of Epstein known musician contacts are listed. The only new detail is Epstein’s purchase of a valuable cello to be played by the son-in-law of the former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. The present location of the cello is unspecified.
The residual mystery is why, given the extent of his nefarious activities in underage sex and high finance, Epstein spent so much time ingratiating himself with classical musicians.
Did he see music as a way of acquiring elite status, or was it just another form of sordid exploitation? Apart from a spell on the board of Interlochen, which was terminated at his first conviction, Epstein never got involved with the practicalities of music making. He was a bystander who wanted kudos without commitment. He wanted the glamour of music without the headache.
Now, a handful of musicians are paying the price. But the full story has yet to be told.
Here’s the Telegraph saga.
